SONG

The College
Song

The anthem of the Old Gallians — sung at assembly, at matches, and wherever Gallians gather.

A Tradition of Song

The College Song is one of the most cherished traditions of Lawrence College. Sung at formal assemblies, end-of-term gatherings, prize-giving ceremonies, and wherever Old Gallians come together, it is an expression of pride in the Gallian identity and gratitude for the formative years spent on the Ghora Gali hilltop.

The song connects generations of Gallians — past and present — in a shared bond of belonging. When Old Gallians gather at OGAP reunions, the first notes of the College Song are invariably met with emotion and nostalgia.

The College Song

To Set The Cause Above Renown

To Love The Game Beyond The Prize.

To Honour, While You Strike Him Down

The Foe That Comes With Fearless Eyes.

To Count The Life Of Battle Good

And Dear The Land That Gave You Birth.

And Dearer Yet The Brotherhood

That Binds The Brave Of All The Earth.

To-Day And Here The Fight's Begun

Of The Great Fellowship You're Free.

Henceforth The School And You Are One

And What You Are, The Race Shall Be

When the Song is Sung

The College Song is performed at several key moments in the Lawrence College calendar:

  • Morning assembly at the start of each term
  • Annual Prize-Giving ceremony
  • Passing-Out Parade for the Senior School leavers
  • OGAP Annual Reunion gatherings
  • Inter-House competition finals
  • Before major sports fixtures
  • At formal dinners hosted by the college

The Motto in Music

The recurring refrain of "Never Give In" throughout the College Song is no accident — it is a deliberate invocation of Maj Gen Sir Henry Montgomery Lawrence's dying words, which became the college's motto. The song serves as a musical reaffirmation of the values that define Lawrence College: resilience, honour, and an unyielding spirit.

Many Old Gallians report that hearing the College Song long after their departure from Ghora Gali produces powerful feelings of connection to the institution and to the friends they made there. The song is, in a very real sense, the sound of the Gallian community.
