Introduction to
Lawrence College

Pakistan's premier residential school nestled in the Murree Hills since 1860.

About Lawrence College

Lawrence College Ghora Gali is one of Pakistan's most distinguished and oldest educational institutions. Founded in 1860 by Maj Gen Sir Henry Montgomery Lawrence, the college was established with the noble purpose of providing quality education to the sons of British and Indian soldiers serving in the Indian subcontinent.

Situated at an altitude of 6,395 feet (approximately 1,950 metres) above sea level in the scenic Murree Hills of Punjab, Pakistan, the college spans a magnificent campus of approximately 100 acres. The natural setting — surrounded by pine forests, clear mountain air and breathtaking vistas — creates an ideal environment for academic pursuit and character building.

Established in 1860, following the vision of Sir Henry Lawrence, LCGG is the oldest residential institution of its type in Pakistan. Lawrence College started as an asylum with the object to provide a plain and practical education to the orphans and children of the British soldiers in India. It had 82 children in its care initially. The number rose to 204 boys and 101 girls in 1914 when it was taken over by the Government of Punjab, as the Lawrence Memorial School; and to 356 boys and 124 girls when it became Lawrence College in 1927 with the construction of the lower estate. The girls' section was transferred to St. Denys' School, Murree in 1949. The college was handed over to a Board of Governors in 1962 (grant of autonomy by the Punjab Government), effective to date.

The students of this prestigious institution are known as Gallians. Gallians have performed extremely well in every walk of life — as distinguished public servants, politicians, artists, military officials, businessmen, doctors and engineers. The college is ranked among the top few schools in the country and is renowned for providing high-quality teaching to its pupils combined with all-round development of character and leadership qualities. Today, there are about 700+ boys on the rolls of the three schools.

Started in 1860 in unpretentious barracks, housing about 82 boys and girls of different ages, it developed into its present estate comprising the Junior, Preparatory and Senior Schools in different phases.

The Motto & Spirit

"Never Give In"

These were the last words of Maj Gen Sir Henry Montgomery Lawrence before his death at Lucknow in 1857, and they remain the guiding motto of Lawrence College to this day. The spirit of resilience, perseverance and courage that these words embody permeates every aspect of college life.

The Gallian spirit — as students of Lawrence College are known — is characterised by honour, service and the relentless pursuit of excellence in all fields: academic, sporting, artistic and moral. Old Gallians carry this spirit into their professional lives and into service of the nation.

The College Today

Lawrence College today is a fully residential boarding school for boys, organised into three schools:

  • Junior School — for younger students beginning their Gallian journey
  • Preparatory School — the intermediate stage of development
  • Senior School — the culmination of the Gallian experience, preparing students for university and beyond

The college is governed by a Governing Body under the authority of the Government of Pakistan and the Punjab government. The current Principal is Brig. Jawad Ahmed Zaka, SI(M) (Retd), who leads the college with a vision of holistic excellence and character-building. The Principal is supported by vice-principals, housemasters, and a dedicated teaching faculty of over 80 staff across all three schools.

Location & Setting

Ghora Gali is a small village in the Murree tehsil of Rawalpindi district, Punjab province. Lawrence College sits within this village, commanding views of the surrounding pine-clad hills. The nearest major city is Rawalpindi / Islamabad, approximately 50 km to the southwest.

The mountain environment is integral to the Lawrence College experience. Cool summers, bracing winters, and the natural grandeur of the Murree Hills shape the character of every Gallian. The college grounds include sports fields, a running track, the Thurley Hospital, the College Mosque, the Memorial Chapel, a museum, dining halls, and the four boarding houses.

Lawrence College, Ghora Gali, Murree is situated at the beautiful foothills of the Himalayas at a height of about 1,950 metres (6,395 feet) above sea level, on a pine-covered spur. The estate covers an area of about 100 acres and lies about 2 km from the old Rawalpindi–Murree Road, some 5 km from Murree and 57 km from Rawalpindi.

It is about 60 minutes' drive from Islamabad and can be approached easily via the old Murree Road or the Murree Expressway.

The climate is very healthy and invigorating. In summer the temperature seldom reaches 35°C, and the monsoon rain of July and August is intermittent. During the cold weather, when the estate receives some snowfall, the Junior and Preparatory Schools close for about three months — from December to March — while the Senior School closes from December to the second week of January.

Why Lawrence College?

Lawrence College is consistently ranked among the top five boarding institutes in Pakistan. Its 166-year legacy of academic excellence, character formation and national service sets it apart from all other schools.

The corridors of Lawrence College embody a set of values that define the Gallian experience and the kind of person the college aims to develop:

Excellence
Integrity
Discipline
Service
Leadership
Brotherhood
Resilience
Faith
Respect
Patriotism

These are not merely aspirations — they are the lived experience of every Gallian, shaped by the house system, the inter-house competition, the pastoral care framework, the daily discipline of boarding school life, and the extraordinary natural setting of Ghora Gali at 6,395 feet.

Mission

Lawrence College's mission is to provide a holistic education of the highest quality — developing the intellectual, moral, physical, spiritual and social dimensions of every student. The college aims to produce young men of complete character: academically able, morally grounded, physically fit and socially responsible.

Character building, instilling high moral values, development of wholesome personality and awareness of societal obligations are central to what Lawrence College offers. The college is acutely aware of its obligation to equip its students to make their way in the world as confident, caring, dignified and responsible global citizens.

At its heart, Lawrence College believes in a merit-based system in everything it does — academic selection, awards, appointments and advancement — ensuring that every Gallian earns his place and his achievements through genuine ability and honest effort.

A Community of Distinction

Lawrence College has produced an extraordinary number of distinguished alumni — Old Gallians — who have served Pakistan in every field: the armed forces, politics, diplomacy, cricket, academia, business and the arts. The Old Gallian Association Pakistan (OGAP) maintains a vibrant alumni network that supports the college and mentors current students.

Notable Old Gallians include former Prime Ministers, senior military officers, national cricket team members, and leaders of industry. The breadth of Gallian achievement speaks to the college's enduring success in nurturing well-rounded individuals.
