A Boarding School of Care
At Lawrence College, pastoral care is not an afterthought — it is woven into the very fabric of the institution. As a fully residential boarding school, Lawrence College is responsible for the total welfare of its students: their academic progress, physical health, emotional wellbeing, spiritual development and social growth.
This holistic approach to student welfare has been central to the Lawrence College ethos since its founding. Maj Gen Sir Henry Montgomery Lawrence's original vision was for a caring community where boys far from home would be nurtured and supported as well as educated. That vision remains fully alive today.
The House System
The house system is the cornerstone of pastoral care at Lawrence College. Every student upon arrival is assigned to one of the four houses — Wightwick, Walker, Peake or Wright — and that house becomes their home, their family and their primary community for the duration of their time at the college.
Each house is led by a Housemaster or Housemistress — a senior member of teaching staff responsible for the day-to-day welfare, discipline, academic support and personal development of every boy in their care, supported by Assistant Housemasters and House Prefects. Each house in the Junior and Preparatory Schools accommodates approximately 40 boys; in the Senior School each house accommodates approximately 75 boys. Beyond academics, emphasis is placed on personality development through guidance in adjustment, communication, behaviour, hygiene, fitness and life skills, enabling students from across the country and abroad to adapt smoothly to school life.
Wightwick House
Housemaster and assistant housemasters provide round-the-clock pastoral support to every Wightwick boy.
Walker House
Dedicated pastoral team ensures every Walker boy's academic and personal growth is monitored and supported.
Peake House
Peake's housemaster maintains close contact with parents and guardians for a true partnership in care.
Wright House
Wright House fosters mentorship between senior and junior students as the foundation of its pastoral culture.
Academic Pastoral Support
Pastoral care extends into the academic sphere. Each student's academic progress is monitored throughout the year, and housemasters are informed of any concerns. Boys who are struggling receive additional support through supervised study periods, one-to-one attention from subject teachers, and — where necessary — referral for specialist help.
The Lawrence College timetable builds in structured prep (preparation) time each evening, where students complete their assignments under supervision. This structured approach ensures no boy falls behind and that disciplined study habits are formed from the earliest years.
Emotional & Social Wellbeing
Being away from home, often for the first time, can be challenging for younger students. Lawrence College takes this seriously. New students are welcomed and inducted into their house with particular care, with senior students and prefects assigned to guide and support them through the transition.
Regular house meetings, informal pastoral conversations, and a culture of openness between boys and their housemasters ensure that personal difficulties are identified early and addressed sensitively. The college also maintains access to counselling support for students who need it.
Student Assessment Framework
Lawrence College employs a comprehensive assessment framework to monitor each student's academic and personal progress throughout the year:
- Lesson Assessment — ongoing in-class evaluation by subject teachers
- Weekly Worksheets — regular written exercises to reinforce learning
- Monthly Tests — short tests to identify knowledge gaps early
- Terminal Examinations — formal examinations at the end of each term
- Annual Examination — comprehensive year-end assessment
- Behaviour Assessment — housemaster's evaluation of conduct, character and co-curricular engagement
Results, together with the Housemaster's and Principal's reports, are sent to parents after each assessment period. Parent-teacher meetings are held after the Mid-Term Examination to allow direct communication between families and teaching staff.
Child Safeguarding
Lawrence College is committed to creating and maintaining a safe environment for every student. The college has partnered with ROZAN, a leading child protection organisation, for staff training in child safeguarding. All relevant staff are trained to identify warning signs of abuse and distress, and clear reporting and response protocols are in place to ensure prompt action when concerns are raised.
The college's motto in this area is: "A Safe Child is A Happy Child." Every staff member — teaching and non-teaching — is regarded as a first-responder when it comes to student safety. Lawrence College's safeguarding commitment is an integral part of its pastoral care framework, not an optional extra.
Conduct & Discipline
Students are expected to strictly follow the College rules. Violations can result in withdrawal or expulsion, with or without warning. The following are strictly prohibited:
- Indiscipline, cheating, lying, stealing and immoral conduct
- Breaking bounds or leaving the campus without proper permission or in unauthorised dress
- Disrespect and rudeness to staff and seniors
- Keeping firearms, knives or other lethal weapons
- Smoking, using drugs or alcohol
- Damaging College property
- Possession of mobile phones and other such gadgets
- Absenting from classes and College activities without genuine cause
- Being habitually unpunctual, untidy or slovenly
- Repeated poor performance in academics
- Absence from the dormitory or house after lights out
Good conduct, discipline and respect for others are the cornerstones of character-building at Lawrence College. Discipline is not just a rule — it is a habit that shapes future success.
Convenience & Care
To facilitate pupils and staff, Lawrence College has established cafeterias, general stores, a college bakery, a barber shop, a shoe shop and provides tailored uniforms — each designed to meet the daily needs of the community. The three schools' cafeterias offer healthful and nutritious drinks, fresh fruits and snacks while strictly banning carbonated and energy drinks.
The college bakery, established in 2021, is equipped with state-of-the-art baking units, professionally trained chefs and strict hygienic standards. It provides fresh, nutritious, cost-effective bakery items for students' regular meals and for the families of residential staff.
Campus Security
Lawrence College maintains a professional security operation led by a retired Army officer. CCTV cameras are installed at key points throughout the campus and the security staff vigilantly looks after the campus round the clock, ensuring the safety and security of every student and resident.
Communication with Parents
Lawrence College maintains active communication with parents and guardians throughout the year. Regular progress reports, end-of-term reports, and — where needed — direct contact from the housemaster keep parents informed and involved in their son's development.
The exeat system allows boys to visit home at regular intervals (see the Exeats page for details), maintaining the vital link between student and family while preserving the immersive boarding school environment that is so central to the Gallian formation.
