Pastoral Care &
Student Welfare

Every Gallian is nurtured, supported and challenged to become their best self.

A Boarding School of Care

At Lawrence College, pastoral care is not an afterthought — it is woven into the very fabric of the institution. As a fully residential boarding school, Lawrence College is responsible for the total welfare of its students: their academic progress, physical health, emotional wellbeing, spiritual development and social growth.

This holistic approach to student welfare has been central to the Lawrence College ethos since its founding. Sir Henry Lawrence's original vision was for a caring community where boys far from home would be nurtured and supported as well as educated. That vision remains fully alive today.

The House System

The house system is the cornerstone of pastoral care at Lawrence College. Every student upon arrival is assigned to one of the four houses — Wightwick, Walker, Peake or Wright — and that house becomes their home, their family and their primary community for the duration of their time at the college.

Each house is led by a Housemaster — a senior member of teaching staff who lives in or near the house and is responsible for the day-to-day welfare, discipline, academic support and personal development of every boy in his care. The Housemaster is supported by Assistant Housemasters and House Prefects — senior students who take on pastoral responsibilities for younger boys.

Academic Pastoral Support

Pastoral care extends into the academic sphere. Each student's academic progress is monitored throughout the year, and housemasters are informed of any concerns. Boys who are struggling receive additional support through supervised study periods, one-to-one attention from subject teachers, and — where necessary — referral for specialist help.

The Lawrence College timetable builds in structured prep (preparation) time each evening, where students complete their assignments under supervision. This structured approach ensures no boy falls behind and that disciplined study habits are formed from the earliest years.

Emotional & Social Wellbeing

Being away from home, often for the first time, can be challenging for younger students. Lawrence College takes this seriously. New students are welcomed and inducted into their house with particular care, with senior students and prefects assigned to guide and support them through the transition.

Regular house meetings, informal pastoral conversations, and a culture of openness between boys and their housemasters ensure that personal difficulties are identified early and addressed sensitively. The college also maintains access to counselling support for students who need it.

Communication with Parents

Lawrence College maintains active communication with parents and guardians throughout the year. Regular progress reports, end-of-term reports, and — where needed — direct contact from the housemaster keep parents informed and involved in their son's development.

The exeat system allows boys to visit home at regular intervals (see the Exeats page for details), maintaining the vital link between student and family while preserving the immersive boarding school environment that is so central to the Gallian formation.
