The Beginning of the Gallian Journey
The Junior School is located on the upper estate of the College, on a pine-covered hilltop where the school was established in the early days of its inception in 1860. Over the past century and a half, many changes have taken place, with the addition of new dormitories, classrooms, dining halls and playing areas. It is currently headed by a Headmistress and caters for young entrants from 5 to 9 years of age, with classes from Grade I to IV and an average strength of 25 boys per section. A team of qualified and trained teachers and staff facilitates the learning process and supervises the boys throughout the day.
The Junior School is where boys take their first steps as Gallians. It is a carefully managed environment designed to ease the transition from home life to boarding school, building confidence, curiosity and the foundational skills that will serve each boy throughout his time at Lawrence College and beyond.
The Junior School teachers are specially selected for their ability to nurture younger students — combining warmth and patience with the rigour and structure that Lawrence College demands. Every boy in the Junior School is known individually by his teachers and housemaster.
Curriculum & Learning
The Junior School follows the national curriculum of Pakistan for Classes I to IV. The academic year begins in the first week of March and ends before mid-December, after which the Junior School remains closed for the winter break until March. Teachers are specially selected for their ability to nurture younger students, combining warmth and patience with the rigour the Gallian formation demands.
The course of study includes high-quality regular textbooks together with supplementary books that build vocabulary, general knowledge and listening, speaking, reading and writing skills. Children are encouraged in creative writing, art and craft, and a child-centred, activity- and project-based teaching approach is applied throughout these early years across the following subjects:
- English
- Urdu
- Mathematics
- Science
- Social Studies
- Islamiat
- Nazra Quran
- Computer Science
- Fine Arts
- Robotics
- Music
- Artificial Intelligence
The Learning Spectrum
The curriculum of the Junior School aims at the all-round growth and development of students, guided by six dimensions of child development — what the college terms the Learning Spectrum:
This framework ensures that no dimension of a young student's development is overlooked. Alongside academic instruction, students develop spiritually, physically, emotionally and socially — building the foundations of the complete Gallian character.
Character-Building Programme
The Junior School places particular emphasis on character formation through a dedicated series of character-building booklets used throughout the year. These booklets introduce students to the values, traditions and principles that define the Gallian character:
- Etiquette & Manners — the codes of conduct expected of every Gallian
- Ethics of Disagreement — how to engage respectfully in debate and difference of opinion
- National Anthem & National Flag — reverence for Pakistan's national symbols
- Seerat ul Nabi (P.B.U.H) — the life and character of the Prophet as a model of conduct
- Qandeel e Iqbal — an introduction to the thought and poetry of Allama Iqbal
Through these, students are taught life skills including etiquette, courtesy and manners, and are expected to exhibit honesty, compassion, empathy, perseverance, patriotism and brotherhood. It is considered vital that they develop a sense of integrity and the moral values to learn to live both independently and interdependently. Beyond the educational experience it affords, the school aims to equip students with an appreciation of cultural diversity in a global environment and to develop a passion, desire and commitment to serving others and the public good in some meaningful capacity.
Pastoral Care in the Junior School
Pastoral care is paramount in the Junior School. The housemaster and house staff are particularly attentive to the younger students, many of whom are away from home for the first time. A warm, structured and supportive environment helps junior boys settle in quickly and develop the resilience and independence that are hallmarks of the Gallian character.
Junior students benefit from the mentorship of older boys in their house, who serve as role models and sources of guidance. This cross-age mentorship is one of the great strengths of the house system at Lawrence College.
Admission to Junior School
Approximately 50 students are admitted each year to Class I, with an age requirement of 5½ to 6½ years. The Junior School admission process follows three phases:
Written Test — November
Candidates appear for a written test in English, Urdu and Mathematics at designated centres across Pakistan. The tests are skill-based and broad-based in nature, set according to the requirement of the particular grade and age level.
Medical Examination
Candidates who clear Phase 1 provide the necessary medical clearance certificates and also undergo a medical examination by the college hospital to confirm they are fit and healthy for full residential boarding school life.
Interview
Candidates who clear Phase 2 appear for the final interview along with a parent or guardian, where college staff assess the child's confidence, communication and suitability for the Gallian environment. Results are announced in December and successful students join in the first week of March.

Parents' Orientation Guide
Admissions are taken on annual basis in all the classes of Junior School. Admission tests are held in the month of November for the new entry of the next session which begins in March.
Parents or guardians are advised to keep the following in mind when planning to admit their son to the Junior School:
- Pre-schooling is a must for all Junior School grades. A boy coming in Class I must have passed prep/KG from an English medium school.
- The boy must be toilet trained and be able to express himself clearly for daily routine chores.
Sports & Activities
Even at Junior School level, Lawrence College takes sport and co-curricular activity seriously. Junior boys participate in age-appropriate sports and activities, developing physical skills, teamwork and the competitive spirit that will serve them in the senior school's inter-house and inter-school competitions.
Junior students also participate in music, art and drama activities appropriate to their age, beginning the cultural education that is central to the Lawrence College experience.
